Centre for Animal-Aligned AI

The Centre for Animal-Aligned AI is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the responsible development and use of artificial intelligence in ways that protect and promote the welfare of non-human animals.

We work to better understand how AI systems impact animals and to ensure artificial intelligence is developed, governed, and used in ways that protect and promote the welfare of animals.

About Us

Research

We conduct and support rigorous, interdisciplinary research into the ways AI systems affect non-human animals. Our goal is to build a credible evidence base that centres animal interests, and to make that knowledge openly available to researchers, advocates, and technologists worldwide.

Policy Development

Our goal is to engage policymakers, legislators, AI laboratories, and developers to ensure animal welfare is embedded in emerging AI governance frameworks. We work to shape internal policies, model evaluations, and deployment guidelines so that potential harms to animals are identified and mitigated before systems are deployed.

Cross Sector Collaboration & Education

Protecting animals in an AI-driven world requires voices from across disciplines and industries. We bring together animal welfare experts, AI researchers, academics, and other stakeholders to share expertise and build practical solutions. We also create accessible resources and guidance to help animal welfare organizations use AI confidently, responsibly, and effectively.

Our why

We are here to help secure a future where the welfare of non-human animals is at the forefront of responsible AI development and policy.

We conduct rigorous research on how AI systems affect animals, translate that evidence into governance frameworks, and equip the animal protection community to engage emerging technology responsibly.

We are working toward a future where the interests of animals are built into artificial intelligence from the start: considered in its design, embedded in its governance, and protected in its deployment.

Current Projects

  • The mass killing of male chicks remains one of the most widespread and underexamined harms in industrial animal agriculture. Our in-ovo pilot project, led by Dr. Janelle Resch, explores how non-invasive biosensing and machine learning can be used to determine the sex of an egg before hatching — offering a path toward ending the practice entirely.

This research is the first step toward building the evidence base needed to advocate for regulatory and legislative change in Canada.

  • We are actively researching how animal welfare considerations can be embedded into emerging AI governance structures — from national policy to industry standards. This work builds on our founding research, including an exploratory report completed through the Futurekind Fellowship, which we are now expanding into a more comprehensive study.

  • We are developing a centralized resource hub for animal advocates and nonprofits, bringing together research, policy briefs, practical tools, and AI literacy materials. The hub aims to support organizations in understanding how to use AI responsibly in their work, and stay informed on the potential benefits and risks that AI poses for animals in emerging technology.

Building AI Literacy in the Animal Welfare Sector

We are developing a comprehensive resource hub designed specifically for animal welfare organizations, featuring practical guides on using AI to amplify advocacy, and educational materials on both the proposed benefits and the real risks certain AI systems pose to animals. Our goal is to make AI literacy accessible, relevant, and actionable for the nonprofits working on the front lines for animals.
